Receiving another honour: Lightweight glass bottle wins second WorldStar Award
24.01.2025: Vetropack's first commercially used, tempered lightweight reusable glass bottles already won a WorldStar Award back in 2024. Now, in 2025, the World Packaging Organisation has presented a WorldStar Award in the “Alcoholic Beverages” category to the 0.33l version of the lightweight bottles introduced in Austria as a standard reusable. Vetropack's innovative bottles came out on top among 550 entries.
At the beginning of 2024, Vetropack's thermally hardened 0.33-litre lightweight glass bottle was introduced as a sustainable standard solution in Austria. The lightweight bottles impressed the judges of the WorldStar Award with 30 percent less weight, significant emission savings in logistics and 20 percent more loops than their conventional counterparts. The jury also emphasised the well-conceived overall system: In collaboration with partners like the Austrian logistics association for reusable packaging (Logistikverbund-Mehrweg) and the Austrian Brewers’ Association (Verband der Brauereien), the bottle and crate design as well as the pallets and logistics were optimally coordinated.
Several well-known breweries are already using the bottles and the system, proving the success of the overall concept – which the World Packaging Organisation has recognised with another nomination for the Special Award in the “Sustainability” category. The Special Awards will be presented at the end of May at the IPACK-IMA trade fair in Milan.
In 2024, Vetropack's tempered lightweight reusable glass bottles were also honoured with the Austrian State Prize for Smart Packaging and a Swiss Packaging Award. The multiple awards reflect the research and development efforts behind the innovative bottles. Vetropack spent almost a decade working on a process for producing tempered lightweight glass bottles. The resulting technology enables Vetropack to harden even lightweight glass bottles for use as reusable containers. The bottles are also more stable. Vetropack is currently the only glass packaging manufacturer in the world to offer this unique innovation.
