Vetropack Foundation Gostomel
In summer 2022, the Vetropack Group established a foundation to provide targeted support for employees at our Gostomel site in Ukraine. To date, our employees, business partners and customers, the Vetropack Group and Cornaz AG-Holding have donated over CHF 960,000. Since the start of 2023, funds have been paid out to our Ukrainian colleagues who have been most severely impacted by the war. Several of them have told us what this means to them, and they have given us some insights into their situations.
More about the Vetropack Foundation Gostomel
The Vetropack Foundation Gostomel has set itself the goal of providing very direct support for Ukrainian employees whose house or apartment was destroyed in the war, or who suffered severe injuries. Support also goes to the families of those employees who lost their lives due to the war. Employees at other sites, business partners and customers have donated money to this cause. The Vetropack Group also doubled all donations from Vetropack employees until the end of September 2022. Vetropack Group CEO Johann Reiter comments: “Raising such a huge sum in just a few months is an impressive expression of solidarity with our colleagues in Ukraine – something of which we can all be very proud.”

Donations will be forwarded to the Vetropack Foundation Gostomel via the account of the ‘Stiftung Drei Könige des Rotary-Club Zürcher Unterland’, a charitable foundation of the Rotary Club. The Foundation’s advisory board oversees payments to our Ukrainian colleagues, which are handled in collaboration with the local team.

After the liberation of Gostomel, many employees asked us for assistance. Large numbers of colleagues throughout the Vetropack Group also wanted to help. This is how the Vetropack Foundation Gostomel came into being – and through it, we have already been able to help 53 people.

On 24 February 2022, Russian occupying forces entered Gostomel and used a cannon to shoot down the entire façade of the building where I was living. Fortunately, fire did not break out – even though they shot an anti-tank guided missile into my apartment. I managed to grab hold of my cat and run down to the basement, where I lived for a week.

While the Russians were occupying Gostomel, I took my wife and children to western Ukraine; I myself went with other men to defend our homeland. I fought on the front line from April 2022 to January 2023, until I suffered a serious wound when I came under enemy tank fire during the assault on the village of Kremenskaya in Luhansk province.

I’m proud of the Gostomel glassworks, where I’ve been working since 1991. Our young family lived in the factory hostel, which was later converted into an apartment building. If there is stability, work and decent pay, everything in life and in the family will be good. And indeed, everything was good – until we saw with our own eyes what "Russian world" means.
